Can you identify my bike? What year is my bike? These are the two most asked questions I get. Serial numbers are a good start to identifing the year of a Columbia bike. One of the drawbacks is the serial number charts for Westfield made bicycles only go from 1936 to 1972. On many older Pope/Westfield made bikes the head badge offers a clue. The model number is stamped into the badge and the model number is year specific.

On this page I will include both the known serial number charts and model number/year lists for older bikes. I will also be adding information on serial number years and production numbers as I get it.

1936 - 1945 (Westfield Mfg. Westfield Mass) Some 1936 models still used the old style badge. Mounting holes are horizontal, one slightly higher than the other.

This starts serial numbers being stamped on the frame under crank hanger. The letter preceding the serial number indicates year of manufacture. Often there will be a separate letter with a number near or above the serial number. The meaning of this code is only now starting to be understood.

It may start as early as 1934 and seems to be a year and month code for the frame. Please refer to the chart at the bottom of the page*. If you notice from the chart 1934 which has serial numbers starting with 'M' have the extra code in the 'BB Code' column with an 'A' then a number. It has been noticed that these numbers only go up to 12 and they seem to progress numerically up as the serial numbers do but not always in sequence.

The conclusion is that they represent the year with the letter and month with the number of the manufacture of the frame. Frames may have remained in the factory anywhere from days to months and sometimes longer before they were built into complete bikes so this may explain the small discrepancies between the BB codes and the actual serial numbers. To break it down, the number would be 1 for January, 2 for February and so on up to 12 for December. The letters seem to be as follows; A = 1934 B = 1935 C = 1936 D = 1937 E = 1938 F = 1939 G = 1940 H = 1941 The letter I is skipped. This may be because it is too similar to the numeral 1 J = 1942 K = 1943 L = 1944 This form of identification seems to break at 1944 as no 'M' shows up in 1945. There are some early 45's with frames no doubt made in late 1944 with 'L' and later ones with 'N' codes so 'M' may have been skipped for some reason.

In 1946 a new stamping machine seems to have been put in operation as the numbers are smaller and more uniform. Also, the BB code is gone completely. Also note that the serial numbers on Tandem and Twosome Columbia's do not fit in with the charts on this page.
